Before the first move
The Sozin Attack is a sharp, aggressive weapon against the Sicilian Defense. By placing the bishop on c4, White targets the f7-square and prepares for a kingside assault. Black must balance solid development with precise central control to survive the coming storm and launch a counter-attack on the queenside.
1. e4White
White opens with e4, the most popular move in chess. By controlling d5 and f5, White invites an open game. You will have to decide how to respond to this central challenge, with the Sicilian Defense being one of the most ambitious choices.
1... c5Black · your move
Move your pawn to c5 to enter the Sicilian Defense. Instead of mirroring White, you create an asymmetrical struggle, fighting for the d4-square and preparing to open the c-file for your future counter-play.
Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)
2. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, the main line. This knight development is much more common than the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the Keres Variation with Ne2. White prepares to blast open the center with a pawn break on d4 very soon.
Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)
2... e6Black · your move
Push your pawn to e6. This move reinforces your control over d5 and opens the path for your dark-squared bishop. It is a solid foundation for the Scheveningen and Taimanov structures you might choose later.
Other paths here: f5 (Sicilian Defense: Brussels Gambit) · h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · g6 (Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation)
3. d4White
White plays d4, challenging the c5-pawn immediately. This is the most aggressive path. Alternatives like the Alapin with c3 or the Kramnik Variation with c4 lead to much slower, more positional struggles than the open lines we see here.
Other paths here: c3 (Sicilian Defense: Delayed Alapin Variation, with e6) · b3 (Sicilian Defense: French Variation, Westerinen Attack) · c4 (Sicilian Defense: Kramnik Variation) · b4 (Sicilian Defense: Wing Gambit Deferred)
3... cxd4Black · your move
Capture the pawn on d4. This trade is essential to eliminate White's central duo and open the c-file for your rook. You are trading your side pawn for a central one, a classic Sicilian strategy.
Other paths here: a6 (Sicilian Defense: Drazic Variation) · d5 (Sicilian Defense: Marshall Counterattack)
4. Nxd4White
White recaptures with Nxd4, centralizing the knight. White could technically try the Smith-Morra Gambit style with c3, but taking back with the knight is the most principled way to maintain the pressure and keep the initiative.
Other paths here: c3 (Sicilian Defense: Smith-Morra Gambit Deferred)
4... Nf6Black · your move
Bring your knight to f6. This move develops a piece and puts immediate pressure on the e4-pawn, forcing White to defend it. It is a standard developing move that prepares you for castling.
Other paths here: Qb6 (Sicilian Defense: Kveinis Variation) · Bc5 (Sicilian Defense: Paulsen-Basman Defense) · d6 (Sicilian: Open, 2...e6, 4.Nxd4 d6) · a6 (Sicilian Defense: Kan Variation)
5. Nc3White
White plays Nc3, defending the pawn and developing a piece. While Bd3 is a possible alternative to protect the center, it blocks the d-file. Nc3 is the most active way to continue the development of the queenside.
Other paths here: Bd3 (Sicilian: Open, 2...e6, 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Bd3)
5... d6Black · your move
Push your pawn to d6. This move creates the famous small center of the Scheveningen Variation. It controls e5 and c5 while preparing to develop your light-squared bishop and castle safely.
Other paths here: Nc6 (Sicilian Defense: Four Knights Variation) · Qb6 (Sicilian Defense: Gaw-Paw Variation) · Bb4 (Sicilian Defense: Pin Variation)
6. Bc4White
White plays Bc4, the signature of the Sozin. By eying f7, White puts immediate pressure on your position. You must now choose between several defensive setups, as White could also have tried the Keres Attack with g4 or the Classical Be2.
Other paths here: g3 (Sicilian Defense: Scheveningen Variation, Fianchetto Variation) · Bb5+ (Sicilian Defense: Scheveningen Variation, Vitolins Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Scheveningen Variation, Keres Attack) · f4 (Sicilian Defense: Scheveningen Variation, Matanovic Attack)
Where you stand
The position is a classic battle of ideas. White will likely tuck the bishop back to b3 to avoid trades and then launch a kingside pawn storm. Black should aim for the a6 and b5 expansion on the queenside, while keeping the center solid. Precise move orders are required from both sides to navigate the tactical minefield ahead.
- c4-b3 Retreat the bishop to avoid being traded
- c3-d5 Pressure the center from the c3 knight
- a7-b5 Expand on the queenside with a6 and b5
- f8-e7 Develop the bishop to prepare for castling
- h2-h4 Launch a kingside pawn storm against the king
