Before the first move
The Hyperaccelerated Dragon is a sharp, modern way to meet the Sicilian. By playing g6 immediately, Black prepares to fianchetto the bishop while keeping the pawn structure flexible. White aims for central control and rapid development, while Black fights for the long diagonal and counterplay on the queenside.
1. e4White
White plays e4, the most popular starting move. It immediately controls d5 and f5 while preparing to develop the kingside. You'll see this more than any other move, as it leads to open games and direct tactical battles for the center.
1... c5Black · your move
Push your pawn to c5. By challenging the d4 square from the flank, you create an unbalanced position. This is the Sicilian Defense, where you trade a side pawn for a central pawn to gain long-term attacking chances on the c-file.
Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)
2. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, the main line of the Sicilian. White prepares to open the center with d4. You might also encounter the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the closed Sicilian with Nc3, but this knight move is the most challenging test of your setup.
Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)
2... g6Black · your move
Push your pawn to g6. This defines the Hyperaccelerated Dragon. You are preparing to place your bishop on g7, where it will exert massive pressure along the long diagonal. This move avoids many early attack variations by delaying the development of your other pieces.
Other paths here: f5 (Sicilian Defense: Brussels Gambit) · h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation) · b6 (Sicilian Defense: Katalimov Variation)
Where you stand
The stage is set for a dynamic battle. Black will fianchetto the bishop to g7 and eventually challenge the center with d6 or d5. White will likely strike in the center with d4. Both sides must balance development with tactical awareness, as the long diagonal can become a highway for attacks in the middlegame.
- f8-g7 Fianchetto the bishop to control d4
- c2-c3 Prepare d4 to challenge the center
- g8-f6 Develop the knight and pressure e4
- e1-g1 Castle kingside to secure the king
