  1. Before the first move

The Brussels Gambit is a provocative and rare weapon within the Sicilian Defense. By pushing the f-pawn immediately, Black seeks to disrupt White's central control and create early chaos, though it comes at the cost of king safety. White must play accurately to exploit the sudden weaknesses in Black's camp.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, the most popular starting move. By occupying the center, White invites a variety of responses. While Black usually replies with e5 or c5, other offbeat tries like the Barnes Defense with f6 or the Borg Defense with g5 exist, though they are much less common and more risky.

  3. 1... c5Black · your move

Move your pawn to c5 to enter the Sicilian Defense. This move fights for the d4-square from the flank, creating an asymmetrical struggle where you aim to trade a wing pawn for one of White's central pawns later. It is a highly ambitious and fighting choice.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. Nf3White

White plays Nf3, the standard move in the Open Sicilian. White develops a piece and prepares to challenge the center. While White could try the Amazon Attack with Qg4 or even the Grob Variation with g4, this knight move is the foundation for almost all of White's most dangerous systems.

Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)

  5. 2... f5Black · your move

Push your f-pawn to f5 to initiate the Brussels Gambit. This shocking move immediately challenges White's e4 pawn and tries to seize the initiative by force. You are weakening your own king's protection, but you hope to catch White off guard and create tactical complications.

Other paths here: h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · g6 (Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation) · b6 (Sicilian Defense: Katalimov Variation)

  6. Where you stand

The position is highly volatile. White should consider capturing the f5 pawn or playing d4 to strike back in the center. Black will try to develop the kingside knight to f6 or h6 to regain the pawn or maintain pressure. Both sides must be wary of the exposed diagonals leading to their respective kings in this sharp tactical struggle.

    • e4-f5 Capture the gambit pawn immediately
    • d2-d4 Strike the center with d4
    • g8-f6 Develop the knight to f6
    • d7-d6 Solidify the center and d5
