Before the first move
The Wing Gambit Deferred is a provocative attempt by White to divert your c5-pawn and seize control of the center. By delaying the b4-push until after development, White hopes to catch you off-guard. You must decide whether to accept the sacrifice for extra material or maintain your central structure.
1. e4White
White plays e4, the most popular starting move in chess. By occupying the center, White prepares for rapid development. While many responses like e5 or c6 are common, the Sicilian Defense remains the most ambitious way to fight for a win with Black.
1... c5Black · your move
Move your pawn to c5. This is the Sicilian Defense, creating an asymmetrical struggle where you fight for the d4-square. Unlike e5, this move signals that you are playing for a win by creating complex tactical imbalances.

2. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, the main line of the Sicilian. This develops a piece and prepares the d4 break. White could also choose the Alapin with c3 or the Bowdler Attack with Bc4, but the knight move is the most respected and common response at the highest levels.

2... e6Black · your move
Push your pawn to e6. This move solidifies your center and opens the path for your dark-squared bishop. It often leads to French-style structures where you maintain a flexible pawn chain while preparing to challenge White's setup.
Other paths here: f5 (Sicilian Defense: Brussels Gambit) · h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · g6 (Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation)
3. b4White
White plays b4, the Wing Gambit. This is a sharp, aggressive attempt to distract your c5-pawn. While White could play the standard d4 or the solid c3 Alapin, this gambit forces you to decide immediately: will you take the pawn and face the pressure, or decline and play a slower game?
Other paths here: c3 (Sicilian Defense: Delayed Alapin Variation, with e6) · b3 (Sicilian Defense: French Variation, Westerinen Attack) · c4 (Sicilian Defense: Kramnik Variation) · d3 (Sicilian: 2...e6 3.d3)
Where you stand
The position is sharp and full of possibilities. If Black accepts the gambit, White will gain a lead in development and central space. If Black declines, the game becomes more positional. Both sides must be careful, as one tactical slip can lead to a decisive advantage in these open lines.
- c5-b4 Capture the gambit pawn to gain material
- g8-f6 Develop the knight and pressure e4
- a2-a3 Challenge the b4-pawn to open lines
- d2-d4 Strike the center once c5 is gone
