Before the first move
The Taimanov Sicilian is a flexible and resilient defense that avoids early forced lines. By combining e6 and Nc6, Black creates a solid central shell while keeping options open for the queen and bishops. White aims for rapid development and central control, while you prepare a counter-punch on the queenside.
1. e4White
White plays e4, the most popular starting move. It immediately controls the d5 square and prepares to develop the kingside. You will have to decide how to challenge this central control, with the Sicilian Defense being one of the most ambitious responses.
1... c5Black · your move
Move your pawn to c5. By attacking the d4 square from the flank, you create an asymmetrical struggle. This is the Sicilian Defense, where you trade a side pawn for White's central d-pawn to gain long-term structural advantages.
Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)
2. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, preparing to open the center. This is the main line, though White can try the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the closed systems with Nc3. You now need to choose your specific Sicilian variation based on how you develop your kingside.
Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)
2... e6Black · your move
Push your pawn to e6. This move reinforces your control of d5 and opens the diagonal for your dark-squared bishop. It is the hallmark of the Taimanov and Kan variations, favoring a solid, flexible structure over the sharper lines of the Najdorf.
Other paths here: f5 (Sicilian Defense: Brussels Gambit) · h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · g6 (Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation)
3. d4White
White plays d4, the signal for the Open Sicilian. White is willing to trade this central pawn to open lines for their pieces. Alternatives like c3 (the Alapin) or d3 (the King's Indian Attack) lead to much slower, more maneuvering games.
Other paths here: c3 (Sicilian Defense: Delayed Alapin Variation, with e6) · b3 (Sicilian Defense: French Variation, Westerinen Attack) · c4 (Sicilian Defense: Kramnik Variation) · b4 (Sicilian Defense: Wing Gambit Deferred)
3... cxd4Black · your move
Capture the pawn on d4. This trade is essential to the Sicilian strategy, exchanging your flank pawn for a central one. It opens the c-file for your future rook pressure and eliminates White's ideal pawn center.
Other paths here: a6 (Sicilian Defense: Drazic Variation) · d5 (Sicilian Defense: Marshall Counterattack)
4. Nxd4White
White recaptures with Nxd4, placing a strong piece in the center. White's pieces are now very active, and you must develop carefully to avoid being overrun. The alternative recapture with the queen is rare as it allows you to gain time by attacking it.
Other paths here: c3 (Sicilian Defense: Smith-Morra Gambit Deferred)
4... Nc6Black · your move
Develop your knight to c6. This move directly challenges White's centralized knight and prepares for further development. In the Taimanov, this knight often stays on c6 to pressure d4 and support a future queenside expansion.
Other paths here: Nf6 (Sicilian Defense: French Variation, Normal) · Qb6 (Sicilian Defense: Kveinis Variation) · Bc5 (Sicilian Defense: Paulsen-Basman Defense) · d6 (Sicilian: Open, 2...e6, 4.Nxd4 d6)
5. Nc3White
White plays Nc3, the most natural developing move. White protects e4 and prepares for queenside castling or central action. White sometimes tries the aggressive Nb5 to harass your d6 square or the positional c4, known as the Maróczy Bind.
Other paths here: Nb5 (Sicilian Defense: Taimanov Variation, Szén Variation) · Be2 (Sicilian: Taimanov, 5.Be2) · Be3 (Sicilian: Taimanov, 5.Be3) · c4 (Sicilian: Taimanov, 5.c4)
5... a6Black · your move
Push your pawn to a6. This is a vital prophylactic move in the Taimanov. It prevents White's knights or bishop from landing on b5, which would be very disruptive to your position, and it prepares your own queenside expansion with b5.
Other paths here: Bb4 (Sicilian: Taimanov, 5.Nc3 Bb4) · d6 (Sicilian: Taimanov, 5.Nc3 d6) · Qc7 (Sicilian Defense: Taimanov Variation, Bastrikov Variation) · Nf6 (Sicilian: Taimanov, Four Knights, 6.a3)
Where you stand
The position is balanced and rich with plans. White will likely develop the dark-squared bishop to e3 or g5 and look for kingside pressure or a central breakthrough. Black's plan involves placing the queen on c7, developing the light-squared bishop, and launching a queenside expansion with b5 to create counterplay.
- d8-c7 Develop the queen to c7 for pressure
- c1-e3 Develop the bishop to control the center
- b7-b5 Expand on the queenside with b5
- f1-e2 Prepare kingside castling with Be2
- c6-e5 Maneuver the knight to the e5 outpost
