  1. Before the first move

The Maróczy Bind is a powerhouse setup where White uses pawns on c4 and e4 to clamp down on the center. In the Breyer Variation of the Accelerated Dragon, Black invites this pressure only to strike back with a tactical knight leap, challenging White's dark-squared bishop and the very heart of the bind.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, the most popular starting move, aiming for control of the d5 and f5 squares while preparing rapid development of the kingside pieces.

  3. 1... c5Black · your move

Push your pawn to c5. By attacking the d4 square from the flank, you create an asymmetrical struggle where you fight for central control without mirroring White's moves.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. Nf3White

White plays Nf3, the standard continuation. While White could try the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the Keres Variation with Ne2, this knight move is the most flexible and strongest path.

Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)

  5. 2... Nc6Black · your move

Bring your knight to c6. You are increasing your grip on the d4 square and preparing to challenge White's upcoming central expansion.

Other paths here: f5 (Sicilian Defense: Brussels Gambit) · h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · g6 (Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation)

  6. 3. d4White

White plays d4, initiating the central confrontation. White could also choose the Rossolimo Attack with Bb5, but the Open Sicilian leads to the most tactical and sharpest positions.

    Other paths here: Bb5 (Sicilian Defense: Nyezhmetdinov-Rossolimo Attack) · b4 (Sicilian Defense: Portsmouth Gambit) · b3 (Sicilian: 2...Nc6 3.b3) · Bc4 (Sicilian: 2...Nc6 3.Bc4)

  7. 3... cxd4Black · your move

Capture the pawn on d4. Trading your flank pawn for White's central pawn is a key strategic goal, giving you a semi-open c-file for your future rook.

Other paths here: e6 (Sicilian Defense: Franco-Sicilian Variation)

  8. 4. Nxd4White

White recaptures with the knight, maintaining a strong central presence. White now has more space, but Black has the long-term advantage of having two central pawns against one.

  9. 4... g6Black · your move

Push your pawn to g6. This prepares to fianchetto your bishop to g7, where it will exert massive pressure along the long diagonal toward the center.

Other paths here: Qc7 (Sicilian Defense: Flohr Variation) · Qb6 (Sicilian Defense: Godiva Variation) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Löwenthal Variation) · d5 (Sicilian Defense: Nimzo-American Variation)

  10. 5. c4White

White plays c4, the hallmark of the Maróczy Bind. While White could develop naturally with Nc3 or Be2, the Bind is the most ambitious attempt to stifle Black's counterplay.

Other paths here: Nxc6 (Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon, Exchange Variation) · Nc3 (Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon, Modern Variation) · Bc4 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Bc4) · Be2 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Be2)

  11. 5... Bg7Black · your move

Fianchetto your bishop to g7. From this square, your bishop becomes a monster, eyeing the d4 knight and the entire long dark-square diagonal.

Other paths here: d6 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 5...d6) · Nf6 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 5...Nf6)

  12. 6. Be3White

White plays Be3, a solid developing move. White often tries Nc2 or Nb3 to avoid trades, but the bishop move is the most principled way to support the center.

Other paths here: Nb3 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 6.Nb3) · Nc2 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 6.Nc2)

  13. 6... Nf6Black · your move

Develop your knight to f6. You are attacking the e4 pawn and forcing White to decide how to defend it while preparing to castle your king to safety.

    Other paths here: d6 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 6.Be3 d6) · Nh6 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 6.Be3 Nh6)

  14. 7. Nc3White

White plays Nc3, the most natural way to defend the e4 pawn. This completes a very harmonious setup for White, who now looks ready to consolidate the space advantage.

  15. 7... Ng4Black · your move

Jump your knight to g4. This is the Breyer Variation. You are attacking the bishop on e3 and the knight on d4, forcing immediate tactical concessions from White.

    Other paths here: d6 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Nc3 d6) · O-O (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 7.Nc3 O-O)

  16. Where you stand

The position is highly tactical. White must respond to the threat on e3, usually by bringing the queen to g4 to accept the trade. Black aims to use the resulting pressure on d4 to equalize, while White tries to maintain the space advantage. Both sides must navigate the complex piece trades carefully to emerge with a better endgame structure.

    • d1-g4 Capture the knight to simplify the position
    • c6-d4 Pressure the d4 knight after the trade
    • f1-e2 Develop the bishop and prepare to castle
    • e8-g8 Castle kingside to secure the king
