  1. Before the first move

The Accelerated Dragon is a dynamic Sicilian where Black aims to fianchetto the kingside bishop immediately without playing d6 first. In this Exchange Variation, White chooses to simplify the center early by trading knights on c6, leading to a structure where Black's central pawn mass is bolstered while White seeks rapid development.

  2. 1. e4White

White starts with e4, the most popular opening move. By occupying the center, White invites Black to choose a defense. While many replies exist, the Sicilian Defense with c5 is the most combative response to this central challenge.

  3. 1... c5Black · your move

Advance your pawn to c5. By attacking the d4 square from the flank, you create an asymmetrical struggle and prevent White from easily maintaining a duo of pawns in the center.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. Nf3White

White plays Nf3, the main line of the Sicilian. While White could try the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the Keres Variation with Ne2, this knight move is the most direct way to prepare the central break with d4.

Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)

  5. 2... Nc6Black · your move

Bring your knight to c6. You are developing a piece to its most natural square where it puts maximum pressure on the d4 and e5 squares, keeping White's central ambitions in check.

Other paths here: f5 (Sicilian Defense: Brussels Gambit) · h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · g6 (Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation)

  6. 3. d4White

White plays d4, opening the center. White could also choose the Rossolimo Attack with Bb5 to avoid the main lines, but d4 leads to the most critical and theoretically rich positions in the Sicilian complex.

    Other paths here: Bb5 (Sicilian Defense: Nyezhmetdinov-Rossolimo Attack) · b4 (Sicilian Defense: Portsmouth Gambit) · b3 (Sicilian: 2...Nc6 3.b3) · Bc4 (Sicilian: 2...Nc6 3.Bc4)

  7. 3... cxd4Black · your move

Capture the pawn on d4. You trade your flank pawn for White's central pawn, which is the core strategic trade of the Sicilian. This opens the c-file for your future rook operations.

Other paths here: e6 (Sicilian Defense: Franco-Sicilian Variation)

  8. 4. Nxd4White

White recaptures with the knight on d4. White now has a central space advantage and more active pieces, but Black has the long-term advantage of having two central pawns against White's one.

  9. 4... g6Black · your move

Push your pawn to g6. This is the hallmark of the Accelerated Dragon. You are preparing to fianchetto your bishop to g7, where it will exert enormous pressure along the long h8-a1 diagonal.

Other paths here: Qc7 (Sicilian Defense: Flohr Variation) · Qb6 (Sicilian Defense: Godiva Variation) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Löwenthal Variation) · d5 (Sicilian Defense: Nimzo-American Variation)

  10. 5. Nxc6White

White plays Nxc6, the Exchange Variation. Instead of the main line Nc3 or the restrictive Maróczy Bind with c4, White chooses to trade pieces immediately. This alters the pawn structure and sets the stage for a strategic battle.

Other paths here: Nc3 (Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon, Modern Variation) · Bc4 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Bc4) · Be2 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Be2) · Be3 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Be3)

  11. Where you stand

The position is strategically rich. Black will typically recapture with the b-pawn, creating a strong central mass and opening the b-file for the rook. White will focus on rapid development of the minor pieces and castling. The battle revolves around whether Black's central pawns become a strength or a target for White's pieces in the middlegame.

    • b7-c6 Recapture toward the center to strengthen control.
    • f8-g7 Fianchetto the bishop to dominate the diagonal.
    • f1-d3 Develop the bishop to a solid square.
    • e1-g1 Castle kingside to secure the king.
    • d8-c7 Place the queen on the semi-open file.
