  1. Before the first move

The Maróczy Bind is a powerhouse setup for White against the Sicilian. By placing pawns on c4 and e4, White clamps down on the d5-square to restrict Black's counterplay. As Black, you'll use the Accelerated Dragon to challenge this bind, seeking to strike back in the center before White can fully solidify their spatial advantage.

  2. 1. e4White

White opens with e4, the most popular move in chess, aiming for a direct presence in the center. Black has many ways to respond, including the solid e5 or the asymmetrical French Defense with e6, but the most ambitious and fighting choice is the Sicilian Defense.

  3. 1... c5Black · your move

Move your pawn to c5. This is the Sicilian Defense, the most popular and successful response to e4. By attacking the d4-square from the flank, you create an asymmetrical struggle where you'll eventually trade a wing pawn for one of White's central pawns to gain a long-term advantage.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. Nf3White

White plays Nf3, the main line of the Sicilian. This move prepares the d4 push to open the center. White could try the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the Keres Variation with Ne2, but the knight move is the gold standard for maintaining pressure and flexibility.

Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)

  5. 2... Nc6Black · your move

Bring your knight to c6. This move develops a piece and adds a second defender to the d4-square. It is a fundamental part of the Accelerated Dragon, allowing you to develop naturally while keeping maximum pressure on White's central ambitions.

Other paths here: f5 (Sicilian Defense: Brussels Gambit) · h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · g6 (Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation)

  6. 3. d4White

White plays d4, challenging the c5-pawn and opening the center. White could avoid this with the Rossolimo Attack (Bb5) or the Closed Sicilian (d3), but d4 is the most direct path to an advantage, leading to rapid development for both sides.

    Other paths here: Bb5 (Sicilian Defense: Nyezhmetdinov-Rossolimo Attack) · b4 (Sicilian Defense: Portsmouth Gambit) · b3 (Sicilian: 2...Nc6 3.b3) · Bc4 (Sicilian: 2...Nc6 3.Bc4)

  7. 3... cxd4Black · your move

Capture the pawn on d4. This trade is essential to your strategy. You exchange your wing pawn for White's central d-pawn, which gives you a semi-open c-file for your rook later and ensures you have more pawns in the center for the endgame.

Other paths here: e6 (Sicilian Defense: Franco-Sicilian Variation)

  8. 4. Nxd4White

White recaptures with Nxd4, centralizing the knight. This is the standard follow-up, keeping the pressure high. White now has a space advantage, but Black's position remains very resilient and full of counter-attacking potential in the coming moves.

  9. 4... g6Black · your move

Push your pawn to g6. This is the key move of the Accelerated Dragon. You are preparing to fianchetto your bishop on g7, where it will exert long-range pressure along the h8-a1 diagonal, targeting the center and the white queenside.

Other paths here: Qc7 (Sicilian Defense: Flohr Variation) · Qb6 (Sicilian Defense: Godiva Variation) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Löwenthal Variation) · d5 (Sicilian Defense: Nimzo-American Variation)

  10. 5. c4White

White plays c4, establishing the famous Maróczy Bind. Instead of the Bind, White often tries the Modern Variation with Nc3 or the aggressive Yugoslav-style setups with Bc4. The Bind is a more positional approach, aiming to slowly squeeze Black off the board.

Other paths here: Nxc6 (Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon, Exchange Variation) · Nc3 (Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon, Modern Variation) · Bc4 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Bc4) · Be2 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Be2)

  11. 5... Bg7Black · your move

Fianchetto your bishop to g7. This bishop is your most important piece in the Dragon. It stares down the long diagonal, putting pressure on the d4 knight and the b2 pawn. Even against the Bind, this bishop remains a potent threat that White must respect.

Other paths here: d6 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 5...d6) · Nf6 (Sicilian: Maroczy Bind, 5...Nf6)

  12. Where you stand

The battle lines are drawn. White has a massive space advantage and a firm grip on the d5-square, while Black has a rock-solid kingside and long-term pressure on the dark squares. White will look to develop the remaining pieces and slowly expand, while Black must find a way to challenge the bind, often with the f5 or b5 pawn breaks.

    • c1-e3 Develop the bishop to support the center
    • b1-c3 Bring the knight out to defend e4
    • g8-f6 Develop the knight and prepare to castle
    • c6-d4 Exchange knights to loosen White's central grip
    • d7-d6 Solidify the center and prepare queenside play
