Before the first move
The Accelerated Dragon is a dynamic Sicilian where Black fianchettoes the bishop early without committing to d6. In the Modern Bc4 variation, White adopts a Yugoslav-style setup, placing the bishop on an active diagonal to control the center and discourage Black's d5 break. Both sides race to complete development and secure their kings.
1. e4White
White opens with e4, the most popular move at all levels. By occupying the center, White prepares for rapid development. Black has many responses, including the solid e5 or the asymmetrical Sicilian Defense.
1... c5Black · your move
Push your c-pawn to c5. This is the Sicilian Defense, an ambitious counter-attack that creates an unbalanced position and fights for the d4 square without mirroring White's move.
Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)
2. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, preparing to open the center with d4. This is the standard 'Open Sicilian' path. White could try the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the Keres Variation with Ne2, but the knight move is the most principled.
Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)
2... Nc6Black · your move
Develop your knight to c6. You are putting immediate pressure on the d4 square and preparing to challenge White's central control. This keeps your options open for several Sicilian structures.
Other paths here: f5 (Sicilian Defense: Brussels Gambit) · h6 (Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation) · g6 (Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Jalalabad Variation)
3. d4White
White plays d4, the defining move of the Open Sicilian. By trading this pawn, White gains rapid development and space. Alternatives like the Rossolimo Attack with Bb5 are popular ways to avoid these sharp, theoretical lines.
Other paths here: Bb5 (Sicilian Defense: Nyezhmetdinov-Rossolimo Attack) · b4 (Sicilian Defense: Portsmouth Gambit) · b3 (Sicilian: 2...Nc6 3.b3) · Bc4 (Sicilian: 2...Nc6 3.Bc4)
3... cxd4Black · your move
Capture the pawn on d4. This trade is essential to the Sicilian strategy, exchanging a wing pawn for a central pawn and opening the c-file for your future counter-play.
Other paths here: e6 (Sicilian Defense: Franco-Sicilian Variation)
4. Nxd4White
White recaptures with the knight, establishing a strong central presence. White's pieces now have great mobility, but Black will immediately begin to challenge this knight's dominance through development.
4... g6Black · your move
Push your pawn to g6. This is the hallmark of the Accelerated Dragon. You are preparing to fianchetto your bishop on g7, where it will exert long-range pressure across the entire board.
Other paths here: Qc7 (Sicilian Defense: Flohr Variation) · Qb6 (Sicilian Defense: Godiva Variation) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Löwenthal Variation) · d5 (Sicilian Defense: Nimzo-American Variation)
5. Nc3White
White plays Nc3, the most solid developing move. White could also try the Maróczy Bind with c4 to clamp down on d5, or the Exchange Variation by taking on c6, but this keeps the most tension.
Other paths here: Nxc6 (Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon, Exchange Variation) · Bc4 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Bc4) · Be2 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Be2) · Be3 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, 5.Be3)
5... Bg7Black · your move
Fianchetto your bishop to g7. This bishop is the soul of your position, eyeing the d4 knight and the b2 pawn. It provides a rock-solid defense for your king once you castle.
Other paths here: Nf6 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, Modern, 5...Nf6)
6. Be3White
White plays Be3, strengthening the center. This is a very flexible move, though White could also retreat the knight with Nb3 or Nde2 to avoid certain tactical trades on the d4 square.
Other paths here: Nb3 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, Modern, 6.Nb3) · Nde2 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, Modern, 6.Nde2)
6... Nf6Black · your move
Develop your knight to f6. You are attacking the e4 pawn and preparing to castle. This move forces White to make a decision about how to protect the center and continue development.
Other paths here: d6 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, Modern, 6.Be3 d6)
7. Bc4White
White plays Bc4, a proactive move that prevents d5 and eyes the f7 weakness. White could also choose the solid Be2 or the sharp f3, but Bc4 is the most direct way to challenge Black's setup.
Other paths here: Be2 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, Modern, 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Be2) · f3 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, Modern, 6.Be3 Nf6 7.f3) · Nxc6 (Sicilian: Accelerated Fianchetto, Modern, 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Nxc6)
Where you stand
The position is balanced but highly sharp. Black will likely castle and then look to strike with d6 and d5, or launch a queenside minority attack. White often castles queenside and initiates a pawn storm on the kingside. Precision is required for both sides, as one tactical slip can end the game instantly in these Dragon structures.
- e8-g8 Castle kingside to secure the king
- c4-b3 Retreat bishop to avoid tactical trades
- d7-d5 Strike in the center with d5
- d1-d2 Connect rooks and prepare queenside castling
- c6-a5 Maneuver knight to harass the bishop
