Before the first move
The Caro-Kann Defense is a rock-solid response to 1. e4, where Black prepares to challenge the center with d5. In the Campomanes Attack, Black develops the kingside knight early rather than capturing on e4, leading to a tense, cramped struggle where both sides fight for central control.
1. e4White
White plays e4, the most popular starting move. By occupying the center immediately, White invites a variety of responses. While Black commonly replies with e5 or c5, you are about to see a more patient approach that prioritizes a solid pawn structure.
1... c6Black · your move
Move your pawn to c6. This is the defining move of the Caro-Kann Defense, preparing to support a d5 push on the next turn. Unlike the French Defense, this move keeps the diagonal open for your light-squared bishop to develop later.

2. d4White
White plays d4, seizing the full center. This is the Main Line, though you might also encounter the Hillbilly Attack with Bc4 or the Accelerated Panov with c4. By taking the center now, White dares you to challenge their space immediately.
Other paths here: Nc3 (Caro-Kann Defense) · c4 (Caro-Kann Defense: Accelerated Panov Attack) · d3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Breyer Variation) · b3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Euwe Attack)
2... d5Black · your move
Strike at the center by moving your pawn to d5. This move directly challenges White's e4 pawn and creates tension. You are following through on the plan started with c6, establishing a firm foothold in the middle of the board.
Other paths here: Na6 (Caro-Kann Defense: De Bruycker Defense) · Nf6 (Caro-Kann Defense: Masi Variation) · f5 (Caro-Kann Defense: Massachusetts Defense)
3. Nc3White
White plays Nc3, defending e4 and developing a piece. This is the most common way to handle the tension, though the Advance Variation with e5 or the Modern Variation with Nd2 are also very popular paths that lead to different pawn structures.
Other paths here: e5 (Caro-Kann Defense: Advance Variation) · f3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Maróczy Variation) · Be3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Mieses Gambit) · Nd2 (Caro-Kann Defense: Modern Variation)
3... Nf6Black · your move
Develop your knight to f6. This characterizes the Campomanes Attack. Instead of the usual capture on e4, you increase the pressure on the center and prepare for kingside castling. You are inviting White to push e5, which will lead to a sharp, closed position.
Other paths here: dxe4 (Caro-Kann Defense) · b5 (Caro-Kann Defense: Gurgenidze Counterattack) · g6 (Caro-Kann Defense: Gurgenidze System)
Where you stand
The position is strategically rich. White usually responds by pushing e5, gaining space and forcing the knight to d7. Black will then aim to undermine White's center with c5, while White looks to launch a kingside attack. Precision in the timing of these pawn breaks will determine who emerges with the advantage.
- f2-f4 White often pushes f4 to bolster the center and attack.
- c6-c5 Black strikes at the d4 base with the c5 break.
- f6-d7 The knight typically retreats to d7 after e5 is played.
- f1-d3 The bishop develops to d3 to eye the kingside.
