Before the first move
The Mieses Gambit is an unconventional weapon in the Caro-Kann Defense where White develops the dark-squared bishop to e3 early. Instead of the standard Advance or Exchange variations, White prepares to sacrifice the e4-pawn to gain rapid development and open lines for an aggressive attack against your solid setup.
1. e4White
White starts with e4, the most popular move in chess. By occupying the center, White invites you to choose your defensive structure. While many players meet this with e5 or c5, the Caro-Kann Defense you are about to play is famous for its rock-solid reliability.
1... c6Black · your move
Move your pawn to c6. This is the defining move of the Caro-Kann Defense. You are preparing to challenge the center with d5 on the next move, ensuring that if White captures your d-pawn, you can recapture with the c-pawn to maintain a strong central presence.

2. d4White
White plays d4, establishing a full center. You must now follow through with your plan to strike back. While White could have tried the Accelerated Panov with c4 or the Breyer Variation with d3, the main line d4 setup forces you to prove the worth of your opening choice immediately.

2... d5Black · your move
Advance your pawn to d5. You are now directly challenging White's e4-pawn. This is the point of your previous move: you have created a solid support for this central strike. Unlike the Masi Variation with Nf6, this move forces White to make a decision about the central tension.
Other paths here: Na6 (Caro-Kann Defense: De Bruycker Defense) · Nf6 (Caro-Kann Defense: Masi Variation) · f5 (Caro-Kann Defense: Massachusetts Defense)
3. Be3White
White plays Be3, the signature move of the Mieses Gambit. Rather than the common Advance Variation or the Modern Variation with Nd2, White offers the e4-pawn as bait. You must decide whether to accept the gambit by capturing on e4 or to continue developing with Nf6 or g6.
Other paths here: e5 (Caro-Kann Defense: Advance Variation) · f3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Maróczy Variation) · Nd2 (Caro-Kann Defense: Modern Variation) · Nf3 (Caro-Kann: Ulysses Gambit)
Where you stand
The position is strategically rich. If Black accepts the gambit with dxe4, White usually continues with Nd2 or Nc3, aiming to regain the pawn or use the lead in development for an attack. Black should focus on solid development with Nf6 and e6, while White will look to castle queenside and launch a kingside pawn storm to exploit the open lines.
- d5-e4 Capture the gambit pawn to test White
- g8-f6 Develop the knight to a natural square
- g1-e2 Prepare to reposition the knight to g3
- b1-c3 Develop the knight and pressure d5
