  1. Before the first move

The Masi Variation is a provocative twist on the solid Caro-Kann. By delaying the standard d5 push and developing the knight first, Black invites White to overextend or clarify the central tension early, aiming for a more flexible and counter-attacking setup than the traditional mainlines.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, the most popular way to start a game. By occupying the center, White prepares quick development. You can meet this with many replies like e5, c5 (the Sicilian), or e6 (the French), but here we prepare the solid Caro-Kann.

  3. 1... c6Black · your move

Move your pawn to c6. This is the foundation of the Caro-Kann Defense, preparing to support a later d5 push. It creates a solid structure that allows your light-squared bishop to develop freely once the center is contested.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. d4White

White plays d4, seizing the full center. This is the main line, though White sometimes tries the Hillbilly Attack with Bc4 or the Accelerated Panov with c4. You now face a choice between the standard d5 or the trickier Masi Variation.

    Other paths here: Nc3 (Caro-Kann Defense) · c4 (Caro-Kann Defense: Accelerated Panov Attack) · d3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Breyer Variation) · b3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Euwe Attack)

  5. 2... Nf6Black · your move

Develop your knight to f6. Instead of the immediate d5, you pressure the e4 pawn and prepare for kingside development. This move is the hallmark of the Masi Variation, creating immediate tactical questions for White regarding their central pawns.

    Other paths here: d5 (Caro-Kann Defense) · Na6 (Caro-Kann Defense: De Bruycker Defense) · f5 (Caro-Kann Defense: Massachusetts Defense)

  6. Where you stand

The position is unbalanced and full of potential. White usually pushes e5 to gain space, while Black will look to undermine that center with d6 or c5. Both sides must prioritize development, with Black often seeking to fianchetto the kingside bishop or play for a quick break against White's advanced pawns.

    • e4-e5 White pushes e5 to gain space and kick the knight.
    • f6-d5 The knight finds a strong central home if e5 is pushed.
    • b1-c3 Develop the knight to defend the e4 pawn.
    • d7-d6 Challenge the white center and open the bishop's path.
