1. e4 c6

  1. Before the first move

The Caro-Kann Defense is a rock-solid response to White's king-pawn opening. You aim to challenge the center with d5 on your next turn, supported by the c6-pawn. While slightly slower than the Sicilian, it offers you a very sturdy pawn structure and avoids the immediate tactical chaos of other more aggressive openings.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, the most popular starting move, aiming to control the center and develop quickly. You will have to decide how to respond to this central claim. While e5 or c5 are the most common replies, you are preparing a more patient approach that prioritizes a solid defensive shell and a later counter-punch.

  3. 1... c6Black · your move

Slide your pawn to c6. This is the defining move of the Caro-Kann Defense. You are preparing to strike at the center with d5 on the next move. Unlike the French Defense, this move keeps the diagonal open for your light-squared bishop to develop outside the pawn chain later.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. Where you stand

The battle is just beginning as White usually continues with d4 to seize the full center. You will respond with d5, leading to a variety of structures like the Advance Variation or the Classical Line. White seeks space and attacking chances, while you will focus on neutralizing that pressure and exploiting any long-term structural weaknesses in the endgame.

    • d7-d5 Challenge the center immediately with d5
    • d2-d4 Occupy the center with a second pawn
    • c8-f5 Develop the bishop before playing e6
    • g1-f3 Develop the knight to a central square
