Before the first move
The Panov Attack is a sharp, aggressive weapon against the Caro-Kann. White sacrifices a solid structure for rapid development and central activity, often leading to an Isolated Queen's Pawn. Black must defend accurately to prove the long-term structural advantage is worth the early pressure.
1. e4White
White starts with e4, the most popular opening move. By occupying the center, White prepares for rapid development. This sets the stage for many responses, including the solid Caro-Kann Defense that we are about to see.
1... c6Black · your move
Move your pawn to c6. This is the foundation of the Caro-Kann Defense. You are preparing to challenge the center with d5 on the next move, ensuring that if White captures, you can recapture with a pawn to maintain a strong central presence.

2. d4White
White plays d4, establishing a full pawn center. This is the main line, though White can also choose the Accelerated Panov with c4 or the Breyer Variation with d3. You must now follow through with your plan to strike the center.
Other paths here: Nc3 (Caro-Kann Defense) · c4 (Caro-Kann Defense: Accelerated Panov Attack) · d3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Breyer Variation) · b3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Euwe Attack)
2... d5Black · your move
Strike at the center with d5. This move challenges White's e4 pawn immediately. Because of your earlier c6 move, your d-pawn is well-supported, and you are ready to fight for control of the middle of the board.
Other paths here: Na6 (Caro-Kann Defense: De Bruycker Defense) · Nf6 (Caro-Kann Defense: Masi Variation) · f5 (Caro-Kann Defense: Massachusetts Defense)
3. exd5White
White plays exd5, entering the Exchange Variation. This is a significant crossroads. White often chooses the Advance Variation or the Modern Variation with Nd2, but capturing on d5 leads to a very different, more open type of game.
Other paths here: e5 (Caro-Kann Defense: Advance Variation) · f3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Maróczy Variation) · Be3 (Caro-Kann Defense: Mieses Gambit) · Nd2 (Caro-Kann Defense: Modern Variation)
3... cxd5Black · your move
Recapture on d5 with your c-pawn. This maintains your central presence and opens the c-file for your pieces. By taking with the pawn instead of the queen, you keep your queen safe and prepare to develop your knights naturally.
Other paths here: Qxd5 (Caro-Kann: Exchange, 3...Qxd5)
4. c4White
White plays c4, the signature move of the Panov-Botvinnik Attack. Instead of the quieter Nf3 or Bd3, White chooses to blow the center open. You must now decide how to meet this pressure, usually by developing your knight to f6.
Other paths here: g4 (Caro-Kann Defense: Exchange Variation, Bulla Attack) · Bd3 (Caro-Kann: Exchange, 4.Bd3) · Nf3 (Caro-Kann: Exchange, 4.Nf3)
Where you stand
The game has transformed into a dynamic struggle. White will likely end up with an isolated d4 pawn, which provides excellent attacking lines but can be a weakness in the endgame. Black aims to blockade that pawn and simplify the position. Both players must prioritize rapid development and king safety in the coming moves.
- g8-f6 Develop the knight to challenge the center
- b1-c3 Pressure d5 and prepare central control
- c4-d5 Liquify the center to open lines
- e7-e6 Solidify d5 and open the bishop
