Before the first move
The Richter-Rauzer is one of the sharpest weapons against the Sicilian Defense. White castles queenside and launches a direct assault, while Black seeks counterplay in the center and on the queenside. It leads to complex, unbalanced positions where both sides must play with high precision.
1. e4White
White starts with e4, the most popular opening move. By controlling d5 and f5, White prepares for rapid development and a strong central presence.
1... c5Black · your move
Advance your pawn to c5. The Sicilian Defense is an ambitious, asymmetrical response that fights for the d4-square and creates immediate imbalances.
Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)
2. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, the main line. While the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the Keres Variation with Ne2 are possible, this is the most direct way to challenge the Sicilian.
Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)
2... d6Black · your move

3... cxd4Black · your move
Capture the pawn on d4. By trading your c-pawn for White's d-pawn, you ensure an open c-file for your future rook and maintain a solid central pawn on d6.
Other paths here: Nf6 (Sicilian Defense: Modern Variations, Anti-Qxd4 Move Order) · Nd7 (Lazy Knight Variation, Sicilian)
4. Nxd4White
White recaptures with the knight, keeping the pressure high. The Chekhover Variation with Qxd4 is a rare alternative that brings the queen out early.
Other paths here: c3 (Sicilian Defense: Modern Variations, Tartakower) · Qxd4 (Sicilian Defense: Chekhover Variation)
4... Nf6Black · your move
Develop your knight to f6. You are attacking the e4-pawn and forcing White to defend it, while also preparing to castle your king to safety.

6. Bg5White
White plays Bg5, the signature move of the Richter-Rauzer. White could also choose quieter paths like the Fianchetto Variation with g3 or the solid Be3.
Other paths here: g3 (Sicilian Defense: Classical Variation, Fianchetto Variation) · Be3 (Sicilian: Open, 2...d6, 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Be3) · f3 (Sicilian: Open, 2...d6, 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.f3) · f4 (Sicilian: Open, 2...d6, 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.f4)

Other paths here: h6 (Sicilian: Richter-Rauzer, 7.Qd2 Be7, 9.f4 h6)
10. Qxd4White
White recaptures with the queen. The position is highly tactical; White will look to push e5 or f5, while Black will try to use the open c-file.
Where you stand
The battle is fully joined. White aims to use the space advantage on the kingside to launch a direct attack, often involving f5 or e5. Black will look to pressure the d4 queen, use the semi-open c-file, and potentially strike back with d5. Precision is vital, as one slip can lead to a quick defeat for either side.
- d4-f6 Trade queen for knight to weaken king
- f4-f5 Push f5 to open the kingside attack
- a8-c8 Bring rook to c-file for counterplay
- c8-a6 Develop bishop to d7 then a4 or b5
- e4-e5 Push e5 to disrupt Black's minor pieces
