  1. Before the first move

The King's Gambit is one of chess's most romantic and aggressive openings, where White sacrifices a pawn on move two to destroy Black's center. In the Gaga Gambit, White doubles down by offering the g-pawn immediately after, seeking rapid development and open files at any cost. You must decide whether to hold the extra material or return it for safety.

  2. 1. e4White

White opens with e4, the most popular starting move in history. By occupying the center, White prepares for rapid development. While d4 is the main alternative for a more closed game, e4 usually leads to sharp, tactical struggles where both sides must be ready for early contact.

  3. 1... e5Black · your move

Respond by moving your pawn to e5. By mirroring White's move, you prevent them from grabbing more space with a second central pawn and establish your own foothold in the middle of the board. It is the most principled and classic response to the king's pawn opening.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. f4White

White plays f4, immediately challenging your central pawn. This is the King's Gambit, a legendary attacking weapon. You must now choose whether to accept the pawn or decline it with moves like Bc5 or the Falkbeer Countergambit with d5. Each choice leads to vastly different types of games.

Other paths here: Ke2 (Bongcloud Attack) · d4 (Center Game) · c4 (English Opening: The Whale) · Ne2 (King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening)

  5. 2... exf4Black · your move

Capture the pawn on f4. By accepting the gambit, you take the material and challenge White to prove they have enough compensation. You now have a surplus pawn, but you must be careful as White will try to use the open f-file and the center to launch an attack.

Other paths here: Bc5 (King's Gambit Declined: Classical Variation) · Qh4+ (King's Gambit Declined: Keene's Defense) · Qf6 (King's Gambit Declined: Norwalde Variation) · f5 (King's Gambit Declined: Panteldakis Countergambit)

  6. 3. g3White

White plays g3, the Gaga Gambit. Instead of the standard Nf3 or Bc4, White offers yet another pawn to disrupt your structure. You must decide whether to capture on g3 and open the h-file for White's rook, or ignore it and strike in the center with d5 to punish White's loose play.

Other paths here: Qe2 (King's Gambit Accepted: Basman Gambit) · Bc4 (King's Gambit Accepted: Bishop's Gambit) · Qf3 (King's Gambit Accepted: Breyer Gambit) · Qh5 (King's Gambit Accepted: Carrera Gambit)

  7. Where you stand

The position is highly volatile. Black is currently a pawn up and can choose to take a second one on g3 or prioritize development with d5. White's goal is to use the open lines and the center to create a mating attack before Black can consolidate. If Black survives the initial storm and coordinates their pieces, the extra material should lead to a winning endgame.

    • f4-g3 Capture the second pawn to test White
    • d7-d5 Strike the center to open lines for bishops
    • f1-g2 Fianchetto the bishop to pressure the long diagonal
    • h2-g3 Recapture to open the h-file for the rook
