1. e4 e5 2. f4 d5 3. exd5

  1. Before the first move

The Falkbeer Countergambit is a sharp, aggressive way for Black to meet the King's Gambit. Instead of accepting the pawn on f4, you immediately strike back in the center with d5. This creates an open game where piece activity and central control are prioritized over material, leading to tactical and exciting positions for both sides.

  2. 1. e4White

White opens with e4, the most common first move in chess. By controlling d5 and f5, White prepares for rapid development. While many responses like c5 for the Sicilian or c6 for the Caro-Kann are popular, the most direct response is to mirror White's move.

  3. 1... e5Black · your move

Move your pawn to e5. By matching White's central claim, you prevent White from playing d4 easily and establish your own stake in the middle of the board. This leads to the Open Games, where both sides fight for the initiative from the very first move.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. f4White

White plays f4, the King's Gambit, immediately challenging your e5-pawn. White wants you to capture on f4 so they can dominate the center. You could accept the gambit with exf4, or play the solid Classical Declined with Bc5, but the Falkbeer Countergambit is much more ambitious.

Other paths here: Ke2 (Bongcloud Attack) · d4 (Center Game) · c4 (English Opening: The Whale) · Ne2 (King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening)

  5. 2... d5Black · your move

Strike back in the center with d5. This is the Falkbeer Countergambit. Instead of defending or capturing on f4, you immediately challenge White's e4-pawn. This move opens lines for your pieces and forces White to deal with central tension before they can finish their development.

Other paths here: Bc5 (King's Gambit Declined: Classical Variation) · Qh4+ (King's Gambit Declined: Keene's Defense) · Qf6 (King's Gambit Declined: Norwalde Variation) · f5 (King's Gambit Declined: Panteldakis Countergambit)

  6. 3. exd5White

White plays exd5, accepting the countergambit challenge. This exchange opens the center further. Now you must decide how to handle the tension: capturing on f4 is the main line, but pushing e4 to cramp White's kingside development is another sharp and very popular strategic path.

Other paths here: Nf3 (King's Gambit Declined: Falkbeer Countergambit, Blackburne Attack) · d4 (King's Gambit Declined: Falkbeer Countergambit, Hinrichsen Gambit) · Nc3 (King's Gambit Declined: Falkbeer Countergambit, Milner-Barry Variation)

  7. Where you stand

The position is wide open and highly tactical. Black often looks to push e4 to harass White's kingside or capture on f4 to enter a modernized King's Gambit. White will try to use the extra d5-pawn to control the center and develop pieces rapidly. Both players must be wary of king safety, as the f-file and e-file are likely to open early.

    • e5-e4 Push e4 to cramp White's development
    • g8-f6 Develop the knight to pressure d5
    • g1-f3 Develop the knight and guard h4
    • f1-b5 Develop the bishop with a check
