Before the first move
The Falkbeer Countergambit is an aggressive way to meet the King's Gambit. Instead of accepting the pawn on f4, Black strikes back immediately in the center with d5. This creates a highly tactical environment where both sides fight for central dominance and initiative right from the opening moves.
1. e4White
White plays e4, the most popular starting move. By occupying the center, White invites an open game. While many responses exist, such as the Sicilian Defense with c5 or the French Defense with e6, Black usually chooses to mirror this move to maintain a central foothold.
1... e5Black · your move
Respond by moving your pawn to e5. By meeting White in the center, you prevent your opponent from playing d4 easily and establish your own influence over the middle of the board. It is the most direct way to challenge White's first-move advantage.

2. f4White
White plays f4, the King's Gambit. This is a bold, romantic choice that ignores safety to gain rapid development. While White could play the Vienna Game with Nc3 or the Bishop's Opening with Bc4, the gambit immediately puts the pressure on you to decide how to react.

2... d5Black · your move
Strike back in the center by moving your pawn to d5. This is the Falkbeer Countergambit. Rather than accepting the f4 pawn, you challenge White's e4 pawn directly. This move creates immediate tension and forces White to deal with your central counter-attack.

Where you stand
The position is now a central explosion. White must decide whether to capture on d5 or e5, both leading to sharp lines. Black's goal is to exploit the weakened kingside created by White's f4 push, while White aims to use their central pawn mass to steamroll Black's development. Expect a game filled with tactical combinations and high-stakes maneuvering.
- e4-d5 Capture the d5 pawn to simplify the center.
- g1-f3 Develop the knight to control e5 and f4.
- e5-f4 Capture the f4 pawn if White takes on d5.
- g8-f6 Bring the knight out to pressure e4.
- f8-d6 Develop the bishop to support the center.
