1. e4 d6 2. f4 Nf6

  1. Before the first move

The Pirc Defense is a hypermodern choice where Black allows White to build a large pawn center before attacking it. By playing an early f4, you are entering the Austrian Attack setup, signaling your intent to crush Black's position with a massive pawn wall and direct kingside aggression.

  2. 1. e4White · your move

Push your pawn to e4. This classic opening move claims the center and clears paths for your queen and light-squared bishop to enter the game. You are establishing a presence in the heart of the board immediately.

  3. 1... d6Black

Black replies with d6, choosing the Pirc structure. This is more flexible than the standard e5 or c5 replies. White should be aware that Black could also try the Barnes Defense with f6 or the Borg Defense with g5, but d6 is the most solid and respected choice.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. f4White · your move

Push your pawn to f4. This aggressive thrust characterizes the Austrian Attack. You are building a three-pawn front to dominate the center and prepare for a kingside storm. It puts immediate pressure on Black to react accurately.

Other paths here: d4 (Pirc Defense) · h4 (Rat Defense: Petruccioli Attack) · g4 (Rat Defense: Spike Attack) · g3 (Pirc)

  5. 2... Nf6Black

Black plays Nf6, the most principled response to the f4 thrust. By attacking e4, Black forces White to spend a tempo on defense. Black could have tried the Fuller Gambit with d5, but developing the knight is the standard way to challenge White's ambitions.

Other paths here: d5 (Rat Defense: Fuller Gambit)

  6. Where you stand

The stage is set for a high-stakes battle. White has a space advantage and attacking prospects on the kingside, while Black will look to chip away at the center with moves like c5 or e5. Both sides must play accurately, as the position can become tactically explosive very quickly.

    • b1-c3 Develop the knight to defend e4
    • e4-e5 Push to e5 to harass the knight
    • f8-g7 Fianchetto the bishop to pressure the center
    • c7-c5 Strike at the center with c5
