1. e4 d6

  1. Before the first move

The Pirc Defense is a hypermodern opening where Black allows White to build a large center with pawns on e4 and d4 before attacking it with pieces. You are aiming for a flexible setup that often involves a kingside fianchetto and a counter-strike against the White central duo later in the game.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, the most common opening move, seizing space and controlling the d5 and f5 squares. You have many ways to respond: the symmetrical e5 leads to open games, while c5 initiates the Sicilian. Choosing d6 signals your intent to play the Pirc, a flexible system that avoids early direct confrontation.

  3. 1... d6Black · your move

Push your pawn to d6. This solid move restricts the e4 pawn's influence and prepares to develop your kingside knight to f6. By not playing e5, you invite White to take more space with d4, setting the stage for a counter-attack once your pieces are properly coordinated.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. Where you stand

White usually continues with d4 to create a full pawn center, while Black will develop the knight to f6 and fianchetto the bishop on g7. The battle revolves around whether White can use their space advantage to launch an attack or if Black can successfully undermine the center with moves like c5 or e5.

    • d2-d4 Claim the center with d4
    • g8-f6 Develop knight and pressure e4
    • f1-e2 Prepare for kingside castling
    • g7-g6 Prepare for kingside fianchetto
