Zwischenschach: Playing a surprising check that the opponent did not consider when plotting a sequence of moves; a zwischenzug that is a check.
Where the term comes from
German for 'in-between check' — the sharpest form of the zwischenzug, or in-between move. Inserting a check before the expected recapture forces a reply, which is what makes it so effective: your opponent has no time to change plan. The German vocabulary stuck because so much early modern chess theory was published in German.
