X-ray is an opening term: when the power of a piece, either to attack or to defend, seems to pass through an intervening enemy piece. An X-ray attack, also known as a skewer, occurs when two pieces of the same color are caught in the same line of attack along a diagonal, rank, or file. Learn the plan, pawn structure, and typical piece placement behind the term, not just the name.
