What is a waiting move in chess?
- Endgame
- Technique
- Precision
Waiting move is an endgame idea: a move whose sole purpose is to oblige the opponent to move. A waiting move is effective when the opponent has nothing but bad moves available (i.e. is in zugzwang). The practical lesson is to connect the term to king activity, pawn races, and whether trades help the result.
What to look for on the board
- Whose king is more active.
- Which pawns can promote.
- Whether trades help or hurt the result.
