Sortie is an opening term: a queen development in front of its own pawns, often early in the opening, usually for the purpose of exploiting an advantage in space or punishing an error by the opponent. So called because the queen is usually developed behind its own pawns for its protection. Learn the plan, pawn structure, and typical piece placement behind the term, not just the name.
