What is a rank in chess?

Rank is a notation term: a row of squares of the chessboard. In algebraic notation, ranks are numbered 1–8 starting from White's side of the board; however, players customarily refer to ranks from their own perspectives. This matters because clear notation lets you replay, review, and share chess positions without confusion.
