Tactics

What is a question in chess?

  • Tactics
  • Forcing
  • Pattern

Question is a tactical concept: usually in the form "put the question to [a piece]", to force the opponent to commit to a strategic decision regarding the future of a piece. Do not stop at naming the motif; calculate the forcing line that makes it work.

What to look for on the board

  • Checks, captures, and threats.
  • Loose pieces and unsafe kings.
  • A forcing sequence, not just a pattern name.
