What is a piece in chess?

  • Rules
  • Legality
  • Result

Piece is a rules concept: 1. One of the chessmen or figures used to play the game – that is, a king, queen, rook, bishop, knight or pawn. Each piece type has its own rules of movement on the board and of capturing enemy pieces. This is the definition used in the context of rules of chess – for example, the touched piece rule. In a game, verify the exact rule before making assumptions, because one detail can change the result.

What to look for on the board

  • Whether the move is legal.
  • Whether the rule changes the result.
  • Whether a special case applies.
