What is a king in chess?

- King
King is a mating concept: the most important piece in chess. It may move to any adjacent square, and it may castle. A king threatened with capture is in check; a player cannot end their move with their king in check. If a player's king is in check and there is no escape, then the king is in checkmate, and the player loses. The teaching point is to identify which escape squares are controlled and which defender is missing.
