  • Practical
  • Time

Hypermodernism is a clock-management term: a school of thought that prefers controlling the center with pieces from the flanks as opposed to occupying it directly with pawns. Two major proponents of hypermodernism were Richard Réti and Aron Nimzowitsch. The practical skill is choosing moves that fit the clock without ignoring tactics.

What to look for on the board

  • Clock pressure.
  • Whether increment changes risk.
  • Simple moves that keep control.
