What is a flank in chess?

Flank is a chess vocabulary term: the queenside a-, b-, and c-files; or the kingside f-, g-, and h-files. Distinguished from the center d- and e-files. Also called wing. Use it as vocabulary, but always ask what it changes about the position or the game situation.
