Countergambit is an opening term: also "counter-gambit", "counter gambit". An opening gambit offered by Black. Some writers define the term more narrowly as an opening gambit offered by Black in response to an opening gambit by White such as the Albin Countergambit (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5) or the Falkbeer Countergambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5). Learn the plan, pawn structure, and typical piece placement behind the term, not just the name.
