Color is a chess vocabulary term: colour. The white or black pieces, and the white or black squares. The actual pieces and squares may be other colors, usually light and dark, but they are referred to as white and black. See White and Black in chess. Use it as vocabulary, but always ask what it changes about the position or the game situation.
