What is a Chess960 in chess?

Chess960 is a chess variant where the back-rank pieces start in one of 960 legal arrangements. Normal chess principles still matter, but opening memorization matters much less.

What to look for on the board

  • Development, center control, and king safety.
  • The pawn break each side wants.
  • Whether a move creates a familiar structure.
