Capped piece is a mating concept: a particular piece with which one player attempts to deliver checkmate. The requirement to checkmate with the capped piece constitutes a handicap. When the capped piece is a pawn, it is called a pion coiffé [from French, "capped pawn"]. The teaching point is to identify which escape squares are controlled and which defender is missing.
