  • Pieces
  • Activity
  • Coordination

Building a bridge is a piece-play concept: making a path for a king in the endgame by providing protective cover against checks from line pieces. A well-known example is the Lucena position. Ask whether the piece is active, coordinated, and serving a real plan.

What to look for on the board

  • Your least active piece.
  • Open lines and strong squares.
