Boards & Equipment

What is a black in chess?

  • Board
  • Pieces
  • Coordinates

Black is a board or equipment term: the dark-colored squares on the chessboard are often referred to as "the black squares" even though they are often some other dark color. Similarly, "the black pieces" are sometimes actually some other (usually dark) color. You use this term to describe the board accurately, which matters for notation, coordinates, and analysis.
