Before the first move
The Grünfeld Defense is a dynamic counter-attacking opening where Black allows White to build a large pawn center only to strike back at it immediately. In the Brinckmann Attack, White develops the dark-squared bishop early to f4, aiming for solid development and central control while avoiding the more chaotic main lines.
1. d4White
White plays d4, the most solid way to start a game. By occupying the center, White prepares to develop the queenside pieces. You'll need to decide whether to meet this with a similar pawn move or an indirect defense.
1... Nf6Black · your move
Develop your knight to f6. This flexible move prevents White from immediately playing e4 and keeps your options open for several different defensive setups against the d4 opening.

2. c4White
White plays c4, the standard follow-up to d4, putting further pressure on the center. Alternatives like the London System with Bf4 or the Trompowsky Attack with Bg5 lead to very different types of closed positions.
Other paths here: f4 (Canard Opening) · g4 (Indian Defense: Gibbins-Weidenhagen Gambit) · e4 (Indian Defense: Omega Gambit) · d5 (Indian Defense: Pawn Push Variation)
2... g6Black · your move
Push your pawn to g6. You are preparing to fianchetto your bishop on g7, where it will exert long-range pressure across the longest diagonal on the board, targeting White's central squares.

3. Nc3White
White plays Nc3, developing a piece and preparing to seize more space with e4. Black must now decide between the King's Indian (Bg7) or the more forcing Grünfeld Defense (d5) to stop White's expansion.

3... d5Black · your move
Strike at the center with d5. This is the defining move of the Grünfeld Defense. You are challenging White's c4 pawn and creating immediate tension in the heart of the board.
Other paths here: Bg7 (King's Indian: 3.Nc3 Bg7) · c5 (King's Indian: 3.Nc3 c5) · c6 (King's Indian: 3.Nc3 c6) · d6 (King's Indian: 3.Nc3 d6)
4. Bf4White
White plays Bf4, choosing a solid and aggressive development over the more common Exchange Variation (cxd5) or the Stockholm Variation (Bg5). White aims to complete development quickly while keeping the center under control.
Other paths here: e3 (Gruenfeld: 4.e3) · g3 (Gruenfeld: 4.g3) · g4 (Grünfeld Defense: Gibbon Gambit) · f3 (Grünfeld Defense: Lutikov Variation)
Where you stand
The position is balanced but full of strategic depth. White will look to bolster the center with e3 and develop the kingside, while Black must complete the fianchetto with Bg7 and prepare to undermine White's center with moves like c5. Both sides have clear development paths, and the battle will revolve around the stability of the d4-c4-f4 pawn and piece structure.
- f8-g7 Complete the kingside fianchetto
- e2-e3 Solidify the center and open the light bishop
- c7-c5 Strike at the white center
- f1-e2 Prepare for kingside castling
