What is the Semi-Slav Defense: Main Line?
The Semi-Slav Defense is one of the most resilient responses to the Queen's Gambit. By placing pawns on c6 and e6, you create a rock-solid triangle in the center, blunting White's bishops while preparing for a dynamic counter-attack.

Before the first move
The Semi-Slav Defense is one of the most resilient responses to the Queen's Gambit. By placing pawns on c6 and e6, you create a rock-solid triangle in the center, blunting White's bishops while preparing for a dynamic counter-attack. It is a sophisticated blend of the Slav and the Queen's Gambit Declined.
1. d4White
White starts with d4, a move that focuses on central control and solid development. While e4 is more explosive, d4 often leads to more strategic, long-term maneuvering. You will need to decide how to contest this space, with d5 being the most direct response.
1... d5Black · your move
Push your pawn to d5 to challenge White's central control immediately. This move mirrors White's setup and prevents them from occupying the e4 square easily, leading to a balanced and classical struggle for the center.
Other paths here: Na6 (Australian Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense: Borg Gambit) · b6 (English Defense) · e5 (Englund Gambit)
2. c4White
White plays c4, the signature move of the Queen's Gambit. White is already pressuring your center. While White could have tried the London System with Bf4 or even the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit with e4, the c4 push is the most testing and common choice.
Other paths here: Qd3 (Amazon Attack) · e4 (Blackmar-Diemer Gambit) · e3 (Queen's Pawn Game) · Bf4 (Queen's Pawn Game: Accelerated London System)
2... c6Black · your move
Move your pawn to c6 to support your center. This is the hallmark of the Slav Defense, ensuring that if White captures on d5, you can recapture with a pawn to maintain a strong central presence without blocking your light-squared bishop.
Other paths here: c5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Austrian Defense) · Bf5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Baltic Defense) · Nf6 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Marshall Defense) · b5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Zilbermints Gambit)
3. Nc3White
White plays Nc3, developing a piece and intensifying the fight for d5. This is the most aggressive development. Other options like the Exchange Variation with cxd5 or the quiet e3 are less ambitious but very solid. You must now continue your own development.
Other paths here: e4 (Slav Defense: Diemer Gambit) · cxd5 (Slav Defense: Exchange Variation) · Bf4 (Slav: 3.Bf4) · e3 (Slav: 3.e3)
3... Nf6Black · your move
Develop your knight to f6. This move defends your d5 pawn, controls the e4 square, and prepares for kingside castling. It is the most natural and flexible way to continue your development while keeping the central tension high.
Other paths here: dxc4 (Slav Defense) · e5 (Slav Defense: Winawer Countergambit)
4. e3White
White plays e3, a solid move that reinforces the d4 pawn. White could have tried the more aggressive Bg5, leading to the complex Anti-Meran lines, but e3 keeps things more positional and controlled. You now have a clear path to finish your setup.
Other paths here: Bg5 (Slav: 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5) · Nf3 (Semi-Slav Defense: Meran Variation, Sozin Variation)
4... e6Black · your move
Push your pawn to e6 to complete your central pawn triangle. This is the defining move of the Semi-Slav. You now have a very sturdy structure that is difficult to break, though you will eventually need to find a way to activate your light-squared bishop.
Other paths here: a6 (Slav: 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e3 a6) · Bf5 (Slav: 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e3 Bf5) · g6 (Slav: 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e3)
5. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, a standard developing move that prepares for castling. White is following the main line, aiming for a harmonious setup. The position is now rich with possibilities, as both sides have established strong, logical foundations for the middle game.
Where you stand
The position is a classic Semi-Slav struggle. White will likely develop the bishop to d3 and look for a central break with e4. Black's main plan involves preparing the c5 break or capturing on c4 at the right moment to activate the light-squared bishop. Both sides have a solid foundation, and the battle will revolve around who can better time their central pawn breaks.
- f8-e7 Develop the bishop to prepare for castling.
- f1-d3 Place the bishop on its most active square.
- c6-c5 Challenge the center and free the position.
- e1-g1 Bring the king to safety on the kingside.
- c8-b7 Develop the light-squared bishop via b7.
