1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6

  1. Before the first move

The Queen's Gambit Declined is one of the most respected and solid defenses in chess history. White immediately challenges the center with the c4 pawn, while Black chooses to support the d5-point with a pawn rather than capturing, maintaining a firm foothold in the center and preparing for a long, strategic battle.

  2. 1. d4White

White begins with d4, a classical opening move that controls the center and prepares for a queen-side expansion. While e4 leads to open games, d4 often transitions into the Queen's Gambit or various Indian Defenses, depending on how you choose to respond.

  3. 1... d5Black · your move

Move your pawn to d5. By mirroring White's move, you prevent them from occupying the entire center with e4. This solid response sets the stage for a symmetrical battle for central control and limits White's early attacking options.

Other paths here: Na6 (Australian Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense: Borg Gambit) · b6 (English Defense) · e5 (Englund Gambit)

  4. 2. c4White

White plays c4, the signature move of the Queen's Gambit. White is already pressuring your d5 pawn. While White could have chosen the London System with Bf4 or the Chigorin Variation with Nc3, this move is the most ambitious way to fight for a central advantage.

    Other paths here: Qd3 (Amazon Attack) · e4 (Blackmar-Diemer Gambit) · e3 (Queen's Pawn Game) · Bf4 (Queen's Pawn Game: Accelerated London System)

  5. 2... e6Black · your move

Support your center by moving the pawn to e6. This is the hallmark of the Queen's Gambit Declined. You decline the sacrificial pawn to ensure your d5-square remains heavily defended, even though it temporarily blocks in your light-squared bishop.

Other paths here: c5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Austrian Defense) · Bf5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Baltic Defense) · Nf6 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Marshall Defense) · b5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Zilbermints Gambit)

  6. 3. Nc3White

White plays Nc3, intensifying the fight for the d5-square. This is the most natural development, though White sometimes prefers Nf3 to avoid certain lines or the Exchange Variation with an early capture on d5 to simplify the central structure immediately.

    Other paths here: Bf4 (QGD: 3.Bf4) · cxd5 (QGD: 3.cxd5) · e3 (QGD: 3.e3) · g3 (QGD: 3.g3)

  7. 3... Nf6Black · your move

Bring your knight to f6. This move develops a piece toward the center, prepares for kingside castling, and adds a second defender to your d5 pawn. It is the most flexible and popular way to complete the opening's initial phase.

    Other paths here: Bb4 (QGD: 3.Nc3 Bb4) · Nc6 (QGD: 3.Nc3 Nc6) · Be7 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Charousek Variation) · a6 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Janowski Variation)

  8. Where you stand

The position is a classical tabiya where both sides have established their central claims. White will likely look to pin the knight with Bg5 or develop the kingside with Nf3. Black aims to finish development with Be7 and O-O, eventually seeking a pawn break with c5 or e5 to challenge White's central space and liberate the light-squared bishop.

    • c1-g5 Pin the f6 knight to the queen
    • f8-e7 Prepare kingside castling and break the pin
    • g1-f3 Develop the knight and control e5
    • c7-c5 Strike at the center to create counterplay
