1. d4 d5 2. c4 e5

  1. Before the first move

The Albin Countergambit is a sharp, aggressive response to the Queen's Gambit. By sacrificing a central pawn immediately, Black creates tactical complications and aims to disrupt White's natural development. It is a high-stakes battle where both sides must navigate precise move orders to gain the upper hand.

  2. 1. d4White

White starts with d4, a move that controls the center and prepares for a strategic battle. While e4 is the most common alternative, d4 often leads to more closed or semi-closed structures like the London System or the Queen's Gambit.

  3. 1... d5Black · your move

Meet the challenge by moving your pawn to d5. This mirrors White's control of the center and prevents them from immediately pushing e4. It sets the stage for a symmetrical struggle for space.

Other paths here: Na6 (Australian Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense: Borg Gambit) · b6 (English Defense) · e5 (Englund Gambit)

  4. 2. c4White

White plays c4, initiating the famous Queen's Gambit. By attacking the d5 pawn, White asks Black how they intend to defend. Alternatives like the London System with Bf4 or the Chigorin with Nc3 are also very popular at this stage.

    Other paths here: Qd3 (Amazon Attack) · e4 (Blackmar-Diemer Gambit) · e3 (Queen's Pawn Game) · Bf4 (Queen's Pawn Game: Accelerated London System)

  5. 2... e5Black · your move

Counterattack immediately by pushing your pawn to e5. This is the Albin Countergambit. You are sacrificing a pawn to create awkward lines for White and gain active piece play, specifically targeting the d4 square.

Other paths here: c5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Austrian Defense) · Bf5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Baltic Defense) · Nf6 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Marshall Defense) · b5 (Queen's Gambit Declined: Zilbermints Gambit)

  6. Where you stand

The position is highly volatile. White usually accepts the gambit with dxe5, leading to the famous Lasker Trap if White is careless. Black's goal is to keep the d-pawn cramped with d4, while White aims to consolidate the extra pawn and develop the kingside safely to neutralize Black's early initiative.

    • d5-d4 Push to d4 to cramp White's development
    • d4-e5 Capture on e5 to accept the gambit
    • c8-e6 Develop the bishop to support the center
    • g1-f3 Bring the knight out to challenge d4
