  1. Before the first move

The Brentano Gambit is a wild and rare variation of the Ruy Lopez where Black immediately lashes out with g5. While it looks like a blunder, it aims to disrupt White's kingside and seize space. White must stay calm and exploit the sudden weaknesses in Black's structure while Black seeks tactical chaos.

  2. 1. e4White · your move

Push your king's pawn to e4. This move occupies the center, opens lines for your queen and light-squared bishop, and claims space for your pieces to develop efficiently.

  3. 1... e5Black

Black replies e5, entering the Open Game. This is the most classical response, though players sometimes experiment with the Caro-Kann or the French Defense to create an asymmetrical battle.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. Nf3White · your move

Develop your knight to f3. This active move develops a piece toward the center, prepares for castling, and immediately puts pressure on Black's unprotected e5-pawn.

Other paths here: Ke2 (Bongcloud Attack) · d4 (Center Game) · c4 (English Opening: The Whale) · Ne2 (King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening)

  5. 2... Nc6Black

Black plays Nc6, the main line. You'll occasionally see the Petroff Defense with Nf6 or the Elephant Gambit with d5, but defending the pawn with the knight is the gold standard of opening play.

    Other paths here: d5 (Elephant Gambit) · Qe7 (Gunderam Defense) · Bc5 (King's Pawn Game: Busch-Gass Gambit) · f6 (King's Pawn Game: Damiano Defense)

  6. 3. Bb5White · your move

Slide your bishop to b5 to enter the Ruy Lopez. You are putting pressure on the knight that defends e5, indirectly threatening the center and preparing to castle quickly.

Other paths here: Nxe5 (Irish Gambit) · g3 (King's Knight Opening: Konstantinopolsky) · c4 (King's Pawn Game: Dresden Opening) · b4 (King's Pawn Game: Pachman Wing Gambit)

  7. 3... g5Black

Black plays the shocking g5. This is far more aggressive than the standard a6 (Morphy Defense) or the solid Berlin Defense with Nf6. Black is looking for a fight, daring White to find the best way to punish this early expansion.

Other paths here: Bb4 (Ruy Lopez: Alapin Defense) · a5 (Ruy Lopez: Bulgarian Variation) · Nge7 (Ruy Lopez: Cozio Defense) · g6 (Ruy Lopez: Fianchetto Defense)

  8. Where you stand

The position is highly unconventional. White should look to strike in the center with d4 to exploit Black's lack of development and weakened kingside. Black will try to use the g-pawn as a wedge to create attacking chances, but must be careful not to fall behind in the race to bring pieces into the game.

    • d2-d4 Strike the center to exploit weaknesses
    • f3-h4 Challenge the g5 pawn immediately
    • g5-g4 Harass the knight and gain space
    • c6-d4 Jump to d4 if White trades
