Before the first move
The Rousseau Gambit is a provocative and aggressive response to the Italian Game. By pushing the f-pawn early, Black mirrors King's Gambit themes, aiming to dismantle White's center. White must play accurately to exploit the slight weakening of Black's kingside while maintaining a foothold in the middle of the board.
1. e4White · your move
Push your pawn to e4. This classic opening move claims space in the center and opens diagonal paths for your queen and light-squared bishop to enter the game.
1... e5Black
Black replies with e5, leading to Open Game territory. While moves like the French Defense or the Caro-Kann are common alternatives, this symmetrical response remains the most principled way to fight for central equality.
Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)
2. Nf3White · your move
Develop your knight to f3. This active move puts immediate pressure on the e5-pawn and prepares for kingside castling. It is the most flexible and strongest continuation.
Other paths here: Ke2 (Bongcloud Attack) · d4 (Center Game) · c4 (English Opening: The Whale) · Ne2 (King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening)
2... Nc6Black
Black defends the pawn with Nc6. This sets the stage for the Ruy Lopez, the Scotch, or the Italian Game. Other options like the Petroff Defense with Nf6 or the Elephant Gambit with d5 lead to very different types of battles.
Other paths here: d5 (Elephant Gambit) · Qe7 (Gunderam Defense) · Bc5 (King's Pawn Game: Busch-Gass Gambit) · f6 (King's Pawn Game: Damiano Defense)
3. Bc4White · your move
Bring your bishop to c4. This defines the Italian Game. You are targeting the f7-pawn, which is Black's most vulnerable point because only the king protects it.
Other paths here: Nxe5 (Irish Gambit) · g3 (King's Knight Opening: Konstantinopolsky) · c4 (King's Pawn Game: Dresden Opening) · b4 (King's Pawn Game: Pachman Wing Gambit)
3... f5Black
Black surprises White with f5, the Rousseau Gambit. Instead of the standard Giuoco Piano with Bc5 or the Two Knights with Nf6, Black immediately creates tension. White must now decide whether to accept the pawn or strike back in the center with d3 or d4.
Other paths here: h6 (Italian Game: Anti-Fried Liver Defense) · Nd4 (Italian Game: Blackburne-Kostić Gambit) · Bc5 (Italian Game: Giuoco Piano) · Be7 (Italian Game: Hungarian Defense)
Where you stand
The position is highly tactical. White usually responds with d3 to solidify the center or d4 to open lines immediately. Black will look to develop the knight to f6 and castle kingside, using the semi-open f-file for an eventual attack. Both sides must be wary of the weakened diagonals leading to their respective kings.
- d2-d4 Strike the center to open lines
- f3-e5 Capture the pawn if left undefended
- g8-f6 Develop the knight and prepare castling
- e8-g8 Castle to safety behind the f-pawn
- c4-f7 Maintain pressure on the weak f7-square
