  1. Before the first move

The Paris Defense is a solid, conservative variation of the Italian Game where Black chooses stability over immediate counterattacks. By reinforcing the center early, you create a sturdy foundation that limits White's tactical explosiveness on the f7-square while preparing a flexible middle game.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, the most popular starting move. It immediately fights for the center and prepares for rapid development. While Black has many responses like the Sicilian or French Defenses, the most direct way to meet this is by mirroring the move.

  3. 1... e5Black · your move

Push your pawn to e5. By matching White's central claim, you prevent White from easily gaining more space and establish your own foothold in the center while opening paths for your pieces.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. Nf3White

White plays Nf3, the most natural developing move. It attacks e5 and prepares for kingside castling. Other options like the Center Game or the Alapin Opening are much less common and generally less challenging for Black.

Other paths here: Ke2 (Bongcloud Attack) · d4 (Center Game) · c4 (English Opening: The Whale) · Ne2 (King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening)

  5. 2... Nc6Black · your move

Develop your knight to c6. This is the most natural way to defend your e5-pawn while also controlling the d4-square, preventing White from easily pushing a second pawn into the center.

    Other paths here: d5 (Elephant Gambit) · Qe7 (Gunderam Defense) · Bc5 (King's Pawn Game: Busch-Gass Gambit) · f6 (King's Pawn Game: Damiano Defense)

  6. 3. Bc4White

White plays Bc4, the signature Italian move. This puts immediate pressure on your position. White could also choose the Ruy Lopez with Bb5 or the Scotch Game with d4, each leading to very different strategic battles.

Other paths here: Nxe5 (Irish Gambit) · g3 (King's Knight Opening: Konstantinopolsky) · c4 (King's Pawn Game: Dresden Opening) · b4 (King's Pawn Game: Pachman Wing Gambit)

  7. 3... d6Black · your move

Push your pawn to d6. This move characterizes the Paris Defense, providing extra support to your e5-pawn and opening a path for your light-squared bishop to enter the game. It is a solid, if slightly passive, choice.

Other paths here: h6 (Italian Game: Anti-Fried Liver Defense) · Nd4 (Italian Game: Blackburne-Kostić Gambit) · Bc5 (Italian Game: Giuoco Piano) · Be7 (Italian Game: Hungarian Defense)

  8. Where you stand

The position is solid for both sides. White will likely continue with c3 and d4 to challenge the center, while Black should focus on developing the kingside with Be7 and Nf6 to prepare for castling. Watch out for White's pressure on f7, but feel confident in your sturdy pawn chain.

    • c2-c3 Prepare the d4 central pawn break
    • f8-e7 Develop the bishop and prepare castling
    • g8-f6 Develop the knight and control d5
    • e1-g1 Secure the king and activate rook
