Before the first move
The Petrov Defense is a solid, resilient way for Black to meet the King's Pawn Opening by immediately counter-attacking White's center. In the Italian Variation, White chooses to bypass the main theoretical lines in favor of active piece play, aiming the bishop at f7 to create early tactical problems for you to solve.
1. e4White
White plays e4, the most common opening move in chess. By placing a pawn in the center, White immediately controls d5 and f5 while preparing to develop the kingside. You must now decide how to respond to this direct challenge for central dominance.
1... e5Black · your move
Move your pawn to e5. By mirroring White's move, you establish your own footprint in the center and prevent White from simply pushing d4 for free. This leads to Open Games where both sides fight for space and piece activity from the very start.

2. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, immediately putting pressure on your e5-pawn. This is the main line of the King's Knight Opening. White could also try the Center Game with d4 or the Alapin with Ne2, but attacking e5 is the most direct way to keep the initiative.
Other paths here: Ke2 (Bongcloud Attack) · d4 (Center Game) · c4 (English Opening: The Whale) · Ne2 (King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening)
2... Nf6Black · your move
Bring your knight to f6. Instead of defending your e5-pawn, you counter-attack White's e4-pawn. This is the Petrov Defense. It is a highly respected, solid choice that often leads to symmetrical positions where your active pieces can neutralize White's first-move advantage.
Other paths here: d5 (Elephant Gambit) · Qe7 (Gunderam Defense) · Bc5 (King's Pawn Game: Busch-Gass Gambit) · f6 (King's Pawn Game: Damiano Defense)
3. Bc4White
White plays Bc4, the Italian Variation. This is an aggressive alternative to the main lines of Nxe5 or the Modern Attack with d4. White focuses on rapid development and pressure against your f7-pawn, often inviting you to take on e4 to start a tactical skirmish.
Other paths here: Nxe5 (Petrov's Defense) · d3 (Russian Game: 3.d3) · Nc3 (Petrov's Defense: Three Knights Game) · d4 (Petrov's Defense: Modern Attack)
Where you stand
The position is balanced but full of tactical potential. Black can capture on e4 or play Nc6 to transpose into a Two Knights Defense. White will look to castle quickly and use the bishop on c4 to keep pressure on f7, while Black aims to stabilize the center and complete development without falling into early traps.
- f6-e4 Capture the central pawn to challenge White
- e1-g1 Castle kingside to secure the king
- b8-c6 Develop the knight to defend and control
- c4-f7 Maintain pressure on the f7 weakness
