Before the first move
The Philidor Defense is a solid, resilient opening where Black prioritizes a sturdy structure over immediate space. In the Hanham Variation, you'll use your knight to support the center while keeping your position compact and difficult to crack. White will try to use their space advantage to launch a swift kingside attack.
1. e4White
White opens with e4, the most popular move in chess. By occupying the center, White prepares for rapid development. While most players respond with e5, you might also see the Sicilian Defense with c5 or the French Defense with e6 in other games.
1... e5Black · your move
Push your pawn to e5. By mirroring White's move, you stake your own claim in the center and prevent White from easily pushing a second pawn to d4. It is the most direct way to fight for equality.

2. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, attacking your central pawn. This is the main line, but you should be aware of the King's Gambit with f4 or the Vienna Game with Nc3, which both pose different tactical challenges for the second player.
Other paths here: Ke2 (Bongcloud Attack) · d4 (Center Game) · c4 (English Opening: The Whale) · Ne2 (King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening)
2... d6Black · your move
Move your pawn to d6. This move defines the Philidor Defense. You are choosing to defend your e5-pawn with another pawn, creating a very solid but slightly cramped structure that is hard for White to break down.
Other paths here: d5 (Elephant Gambit) · Qe7 (Gunderam Defense) · Bc5 (King's Pawn Game: Busch-Gass Gambit) · f6 (King's Pawn Game: Damiano Defense)
3. d4White
White plays d4, immediately striking at the heart of your position. White could also try Bc4 to pressure the f7-square, but the central break is the most ambitious way to try and exploit your slightly passive setup.
Other paths here: Bc4 (Philidor Defense)
3... Nd7Black · your move
Develop your knight to d7. This is the Hanham Variation. You reinforce e5 without blocking your c-pawn, keeping your position flexible. Though it looks crowded, you are preparing to develop your other pieces behind this sturdy wall.

Where you stand
The position is a strategic tug-of-war. White enjoys more space and easier development, usually placing the bishop on c4 and castling quickly. Black remains coiled and ready to spring, often planning to develop the kingside knight to f6 and the bishop to e7, waiting for the right moment to challenge White's central control.
- f1-c4 Develop the bishop to pressure f7
- g8-f6 Develop the knight and prepare castling
- e1-g1 Castle kingside to secure the king
- f8-e7 Develop the bishop to clear castling
- c2-c3 Support the center and blunt d5
