  1. Before the first move

The McConnell Defense is a provocative choice where Black brings the queen out early to defend e5. While it protects the center, it risks blocking the natural development of the kingside knight. White aims to exploit this lack of coordination by rapidly controlling the center and preparing to harass the exposed queen.

  2. 1. e4White

White begins with e4, the most popular starting move. By occupying the center, White prepares to develop pieces quickly. Black has many ways to respond, ranging from the solid e5 or c5 to more hypermodern approaches like Nf6 or d6, each leading to vastly different strategic battles.

  3. 1... e5Black · your move

Push your pawn to e5. This mirrors White's move and prevents them from establishing a dual-pawn center with d4. You are securing your share of the middle and clearing paths for your queen and bishop to enter the game, leading to a symmetrical Open Game.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. Nf3White

White plays Nf3, the most logical and aggressive continuation. This move puts immediate pressure on e5 and prepares for a quick castle. While White could try the Center Game with d4 or the Alapin with Ne2, attacking the pawn directly is the most testing path for Black.

Other paths here: Ke2 (Bongcloud Attack) · d4 (Center Game) · c4 (English Opening: The Whale) · Ne2 (King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening)

  5. 2... Qf6Black · your move

Slide your queen to f6. This unconventional move, the McConnell Defense, defends your e5 pawn while keeping an eye on the f3 knight. You avoid the main lines of the Ruy Lopez or Italian Game, though you must be careful as your queen is now a target.

    Other paths here: d5 (Elephant Gambit) · Qe7 (Gunderam Defense) · Bc5 (King's Pawn Game: Busch-Gass Gambit) · f6 (King's Pawn Game: Damiano Defense)

  6. Where you stand

White should focus on developing the knight to c3 and pushing d4 to open the center while the Black queen is awkwardly placed. Black must find a way to develop the kingside pieces despite the queen blocking the f6 square. Both sides will fight for control of the d5 square, which often becomes a critical focal point in these unbalanced positions.

    • b1-c3 Develop knight to pressure d5 and e4
    • d2-d4 Strike the center to open lines
    • b8-c6 Develop knight to support the center
    • f8-b4 Pin the knight to challenge White's control
