Before the first move
The Alapin Variation is White's most solid way to fight the Sicilian Defense. Instead of the usual open lines, White prepares a massive pawn center by placing a pawn on c3. You will face a slower, more positional battle where control of the d4-square determines the flow of the game for both sides.
1. e4White
White opens with e4, the most common way to start a game, intending to control the center and develop quickly. While Black has many ways to respond, such as the solid e5 or the French Defense with e6, the most ambitious and popular choice is the Sicilian Defense.
1... c5Black · your move
Push your pawn to c5 to enter the Sicilian Defense. By attacking the d4-square from the flank, you create an asymmetrical position where you can fight for the center without immediately mirroring White. This move signals your intent to play for a win with complex, counter-attacking chances.

2. c3White
White plays c3, signaling the Alapin Variation. Rather than the standard Nf3 leading to an Open Sicilian, White prepares to take the center with d4. This sidesteps popular lines like the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the Keres Variation with Ne2, forcing you to choose between d5 or Nf6.
Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)
Where you stand
The battle now revolves around the d4-square. White wants to establish a classical pawn duo on d4 and e4, while Black must strike back immediately to prevent being cramped. The two main paths for Black are the central strike d5 or the counter-attacking Nf6, both of which lead to rich, strategic middlegames.
- d7-d5 Strike the center immediately to challenge e4
- g8-f6 Develop the knight and pressure the e4 pawn
- d2-d4 Complete the ideal pawn center on d4
- g1-f3 Support the center and prepare to castle
