  1. Before the first move

The Smith-Morra Gambit is a high-octane weapon against the Sicilian Defense where White sacrifices a pawn for rapid development and open files. As Black, you accept the challenge to test White's compensation, while White aims to overwhelm you with piece activity before you can consolidate your extra material.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, the most common opening move. It immediately fights for the d5 and f5 squares while freeing up two pieces. You have many ways to respond, but the Sicilian Defense with c5 is one of the most ambitious and successful choices.

  3. 1... c5Black · your move

Move your pawn to c5 to start the Sicilian Defense. By attacking the d4-square from the flank, you create an asymmetrical position where you'll eventually trade your c-pawn for White's central d-pawn, giving you a central pawn majority.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. d4White

White plays d4, an aggressive central break. While the Bowdler Attack with Bc4 or the Keres Variation with Ne2 are common ways to avoid main lines, this move often leads directly into the Smith-Morra Gambit if White follows up with c3.

Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)

  5. 2... cxd4Black · your move

Capture the central pawn with cxd4. This trade is the foundation of the Sicilian, removing White's central pawn and opening the c-file for your future rook activity. You are ready to face whatever White throws at you next.

    Other paths here: d5 (Sicilian: Smith-Morra, 2...d5)

  6. 3. c3White

White plays c3, officially offering the Smith-Morra Gambit. Instead of recapturing with the queen or playing the Morphy Gambit with Nf3, White wants to open the c and d files for their rooks and maintain a massive development lead.

Other paths here: f4 (Sicilian Defense: Halasz Gambit) · Nf3 (Sicilian Defense: Morphy Gambit) · Qxd4 (Smith-Morra Gambit)

  7. 3... dxc3Black · your move

Capture the second pawn on c3 to fully accept the gambit. You are now two pawns up, but you must be extremely careful. White will gain a massive lead in development, so your next moves must prioritize bringing your pieces out.

Other paths here: Nf6 (Sicilian Defense: Smith-Morra Gambit Declined, Alapin Formation) · e5 (Sicilian Defense: Smith-Morra Gambit Declined, Center Formation) · d3 (Sicilian Defense: Smith-Morra Gambit Declined, Push Variation) · d5 (Sicilian Defense: Smith-Morra Gambit Declined, Scandinavian Formation)

  8. Where you stand

The battle lines are drawn: Black is up a pawn but lags in development, while White has open lines and active pieces. White will likely develop the knight to c3 and the bishop to c4, putting immense pressure on f7. Black must focus on safe development with Nc6 and e6, aiming to weather the storm and reach an endgame where the extra pawn decides the game.

    • b1-c3 Develop the knight to its most active square.
    • f1-c4 Pressure the weak f7 square immediately.
    • b8-c6 Challenge the center and prepare for kingside safety.
    • e7-e6 Blunt the bishop on c4 and prepare d6.
