Before the first move
The Coles Sicilian Gambit is a provocative variation where White offers a central pawn exchange early. Unlike the standard Open Sicilian, White recaptures with the Queen and then retreats it, hoping to lure your pieces forward while setting up quick development and pressure on the f7-square.
1. e4White
White opens with e4, the most popular move in chess. It immediately controls the d5 and f5 squares while preparing to develop the kingside. You have many ways to respond, but the Sicilian Defense is the most ambitious.
1... c5Black · your move
Move your pawn to c5 to enter the Sicilian Defense. By attacking the d4-square from the flank, you create an asymmetrical position where you can fight for the center without immediately mirroring White's moves.

2. d4White
White plays d4, an aggressive central thrust. While the main line usually involves Nf3 first, this early d4 can lead to the Smith-Morra Gambit or the Bowdler Attack if White chooses to develop the bishop to c4 instead.
Other paths here: Qg4 (Sicilian Defense: Amazon Attack) · Bc4 (Sicilian Defense: Bowdler Attack) · Nh3 (Sicilian Defense: Brick Variation) · g4 (Sicilian Defense: Grob Variation)
2... cxd4Black · your move
Capture the pawn on d4. This exchange is essential to the Sicilian strategy, as you trade a flank pawn for a central one, opening the c-file for your future rook and queen activity.
Other paths here: d5 (Sicilian: Smith-Morra, 2...d5)
3. Qxd4White
White plays Qxd4, recapturing with the queen. This is the hallmark of the Coles variation. Other popular gambit tries here include the Smith-Morra with c3 or the Morphy Gambit with Nf3, both of which offer a pawn for rapid development.
Other paths here: f4 (Sicilian Defense: Halasz Gambit) · Nf3 (Sicilian Defense: Morphy Gambit) · c3 (Sicilian Defense: Smith-Morra Gambit)
3... Nc6Black · your move
Develop your knight to c6. This move develops a piece with tempo by attacking the white queen, forcing it to move again and helping you catch up in development while controlling the d4 and e5 squares.
4. Qd1White
White retreats the queen all the way back to d1. This looks like a admission of failure, but it is a specific setup. White could have tried Qe3 or Qd3 to stay more active, but Qd1 aims for a solid, rearranged setup.
4... Nf6Black · your move
Bring your knight to f6. This move develops your kingside, puts immediate pressure on the e4 pawn, and prepares you to castle. It is a flexible move that keeps White's center under constant scrutiny.
5. Bc4White
White plays Bc4, aiming directly at the f7 square. This is a common theme in many e4 openings. You now have a choice: you can ignore the threat and take the e4 pawn, or play more solidly with e6 to blunt the bishop.
Where you stand
The position is dynamically balanced. White has developed the light-squared bishop aggressively, but Black has the opportunity to snatch the e4 pawn or solidify with e6. Black should look to castle quickly and utilize the open c-file, while White will try to use the bishop on c4 to create tactical threats against the f7-square and maintain a space advantage.
- f6-e4 Capture the hanging central pawn on e4
- c4-f7 Pressure the weak f7 square with the bishop
- e8-g8 Castle kingside to secure the king
- b1-c3 Develop the knight to defend e4
