  1. Before the first move

The Pirc Defense is a flexible, hypermodern opening where Black allows White to build a large center before attacking it with pieces. In the Classical Variation, both sides develop naturally, leading to a complex battle for control of the dark squares and the d4-pawn.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, seizing central space and preparing to develop rapidly. You will often see this followed by d4 to create a full pawn center, though many different structures can arise depending on how you choose to respond.

  3. 1... d6Black · your move

Push your pawn to d6. This is the hallmark of the Pirc and King's Indian structures, controlling e5 and preparing to develop your pieces while keeping your options open. It is a solid, flexible foundation for your defense.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. 2. d4White

White plays d4, establishing a classical pawn duo in the center. You must now challenge this space soon. While White could have tried the Rat Defense with f4 or the quiet g3, the double-pawn center is the most testing line.

Other paths here: f4 (Rat Defense: Harmonist) · h4 (Rat Defense: Petruccioli Attack) · g4 (Rat Defense: Spike Attack) · g3 (Pirc)

  5. 2... Nf6Black · your move

Develop your knight to f6. This move immediately attacks the e4-pawn and forces White to defend it. It is the most active way to continue your development and is a key component of the Pirc Defense strategy.

Other paths here: f5 (Rat Defense: Balogh Defense) · Nd7 (Rat Defense: Antal Defense) · e5 (King's Pawn Game: Maróczy Defense) · c6 (Pirc: 2.d4 c6)

  6. 3. Nc3White

White plays Nc3 to defend the center. This is the main line, though White sometimes tries the Lion's Jaw with f3 or the more flexible Nd2. You have successfully provoked White into a standard, solid development pattern.

    Other paths here: f3 (Lion Defense: Lion's Jaw) · Nf3 (Pirc Defense: Roscher Gambit) · Bd3 (Pirc: 3.Bd3) · Nd2 (Pirc: 3.Nbd2)

  7. 3... g6Black · your move

Push your pawn to g6. This prepares to fianchetto your bishop to g7, where it will exert long-range pressure along the great diagonal. This move defines the Pirc Defense and sets up your kingside structure.

    Other paths here: c6 (Czech Defense) · e5 (Pirc: 3.Nc3 e5) · Nbd7 (Pirc: 3.Nc3 Nbd7)

  8. 4. Nf3White

White plays Nf3, entering the Classical Variation. By choosing this over the aggressive f4 or the Byrne Variation with Bg5, White opts for a steady, positional battle. You will now complete your development and prepare to strike at the center.

Other paths here: Bg5 (Pirc Defense: Byrne Variation) · Bc4 (Pirc Defense: Kholmov System) · g3 (Pirc Defense: Sveshnikov System) · h4 (Pirc: 3...g6)

  9. Where you stand

The position is balanced but full of tension. Black will fianchetto the bishop and castle, while White aims for a space advantage. The game often revolves around Black's eventual c5 or e5 pawn breaks to challenge White's central control.

    • f8-g7 Fianchetto the bishop to pressure the center
    • e1-g1 Castle kingside to secure the king
    • c7-c5 Strike at the d4-pawn with c5
    • c1-e3 Develop the bishop to support the center
